Sevens is a hand clapping rhythm game that includes four pattern sets, with a fifth bonus set that is optional for a challenge. The sets get performed twice in order, first ascending, and then descending for a total of seven patterns performed in a row. The sets begin simple and then get more complex as they ascend. This is a great visual to help your students understand the order of the hand motions in each hand clapping set in the game, as well as the counts above the actions. There is a repeat sign at the end of each set to reinforce that a set gets repeated before moving on to the next set.
I have also included a link to a video that shows a step by step demonstration of the whole thing. It first shows performing the whole sevens routine at full speed and then breaks down the motions of each set one by one.
Once I have taught this whole group I like to have students partner up with their visual sheets to practice together. As they get better at the patterns they are then to try to pick up the tempo. Eventually you can have speed competitions and tournaments. You can even add the challenge of having your class perform it as a canon (or round). The possibilities are endless!
My students absolutely love this and I hope yours do too!
